Cold weather can wreak havoc on your car, especially its belts and hoses. If you’ve ever seen a steaming car on the side of the road in the winter, chances are that cold weather played a major role.

The problem is that belts and hoses -- integral parts of an engine -- can become brittle in cold weather, and the temperature changes that occur (cold weather, hot engine, etc.) cause weaknesses to show up. This is especially true of belt driven components, which become harder to turn when they’re cold and thus are at a higher risk for belt failure.
